5 Must-Know Phrases in Moroccan Arabic (Darija)

Start speaking with confidence—even if you’re a total beginner!

Learning Moroccan Arabic (Darija) can feel intimidating at first—especially if you’re used to Modern Standard Arabic or no Arabic at all. But the good news? You don’t need to know everything to start speaking. Just a few core phrases can open the door to connection, warmth, and a whole lot of “bslama” vibes.

Here are 5 essential Darija phrases that you’ll hear and use all the time in Morocco. These are practical, beginner-friendly, and immediately useful—whether you're visiting, married into a Moroccan family, or just starting your Darija journey.

1. Salam 3likom (سلام عليكم)

Translation: Peace be upon you
How to say it: sah-lahm ‘ah-lee-kohm
When to use it: All the time. This is the universal greeting, and it’s appropriate in nearly every situation—entering a room, greeting someone on the street, or starting a conversation.

Bonus: The reply is “Wa 3likom salam” – And peace be upon you, too.

2. Labas? (لاباس؟)

Translation: Are you okay? / How are you?
How to say it: lah-bess?
When to use it: Think of this as “How’s it going?” It’s often paired with Salam 3likom in a casual greeting.

Common response:

  • Labas, l7amdullah – I’m good, praise be to God.

  • (“7” = a strong "H" sound from the throat.)

3. 3afak (عافاك)

Translation: Please
How to say it: ‘ah-fak
When to use it: Anytime you’re asking for something—whether it’s at a café, store, or even in your own home. Super polite and always appreciated.

Example:

  • 3afak, 3tini lma – Please, give me water.
(“3” represents the Arabic letter ‘Ayn, pronounced deep in the throat.)

4. Shukran (شكرا)

Translation: Thank you
How to say it: shoo-kran
When to use it: All the time! It's one of the easiest words to remember and goes a long way in showing gratitude.

Bonus Response:

  • La shukran 3la wajib – No thanks necessary / It was my duty.

5. Bslama (بسلامة)

Translation: Goodbye / Go in peace
How to say it: bes-lah-mah
When to use it: When saying goodbye to someone—whether you’re leaving a visit, ending a phone call, or just parting ways. It’s a friendly and respectful way to close a conversation.
